Why it exists.
The beginning
Blue Flame comes from INSENF's Table Collection. The Seoul-based house, founded in 2025, brought in perfumer Luca Maffei to translate an after-dinner mood into scent. The name itself comes from the small blue flame that flickers at the bottom of a glass of sambuca once the anise liqueur is set alight, a brief flicker between glass and flame. Sambuca carries an unmistakable anise intensity, sharp and cooling, with a green herbal undertone that softens into something warmer the longer it sits. INSENF's approach treats that gesture as a starting point for composition rather than a literal recreation, building a fragrance around the quiet atmosphere of the moment rather than copying the drink itself.
Maffei anchored the licorice warmth with mugwort and white jasmine, a heart that reads herbal and slightly bitter rather than sweet, before the base softens into benzoin resin, cedarwood, vetiver, and white musk. The mugwort lends an earthy dryness that grounds the anise, while the jasmine adds a creamy lift that prevents the opening from feeling too sharp or one-dimensional. As the hours pass, the benzoin introduces a soft balsamic edge, wrapping the composition in something faintly resinous and skin-like.
The evolution
The opening lands bright and almost medicinal, lemon peel and mint leaves cutting through coriander's peppered edge in the first 10 minutes. There's a clean, cocktail-glass clarity to it, the kind of scent that feels like cold liquid against skin. By the 20-minute mark, the sambuca starts to surface. Not loud, more like warmth radiating from the center of the composition. The jasmine arrives softly, more texture than bloom, sitting alongside mugwort's dry green bitterness. An hour in, the base takes over. Benzoin brings a quiet vanilla-amber sweetness, cedarwood adds structure, and vetiver grounds everything with its earthy, slightly smoked root note. The white musk doesn't announce itself, it just keeps the whole thing close to skin. By hour three or four, you're left with benzoin and vetiver doing the talking, a soft resinous drydown with enough wood to keep it from going flat. On clothing the next day, a faint sweetness lingers in the fabric, like the room still remembers.
