Why it exists.
The beginning
Verdant is the 2025 release from Ilé Olomu, composed by perfumer Andreas Wilhelm. The composition draws its identity from plantain, and the way that ingredient reads here is raw and vegetal rather than sweet or starchy. Wilhelm builds on that character with bitter orange and lemon zest, two citrus notes that sharpen the green profile without softening it. The result reads less like a perfume and more like a place you wandered into, something dense with chlorophyll and a little stubborn about where it grows. The opening carries that almost-crushed-leaf quality, the sharp volatile burst you get when you tear a wide green blade with your fingers.
The green quality in Verdant carries a starchy, almost loamy sweetness underneath its leafy surface, a vegetal character that recalls soil and growing things rather than anything polished. Bitter orange enters at the top and keeps the opening from tipping into gourmand territory, contributing a dry, zesty bitterness that allows that earthy undertone to survive into the heart of the composition. The lavender and juniper leaf in the middle stretch the green horizontally, adding herbal width and a slightly resinous, coniferous edge that broadens the composition without muddying its clarity.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are all plantain and citrus, bright and almost raw, the kind of green that reads as immediately vegetal on the skin. The lemon zest and bitter orange lead with their sharpest facets, quickly joined by the green presence of plantain that sits underneath like a bass note. That sharpness doesn't fade so much as get absorbed, the way morning light gets soaked into a leaf's surface and becomes part of its color. By the end of the first hour, jasmine surfaces in a whisper, a delicate white floral presence that emerges from the herbal middle without ever overpowering the green foundation. The jasmine here stays light and transparent, hovering just above the composition rather than settling into it. Juniper and lavender build the herbal architecture underneath, their cool, slightly resinous qualities providing structural support for the softer floral notes above.

Verdant was the People's Choice Independent Award winner at the 2026 Art and Olfaction Awards, a recognition voted on by fragrance enthusiasts and industry followers alike. The award placed the composition in the broader conversation around independent perfumery, drawing attention to the way small houses are approaching botanical and unconventional ingredient sourcing.
