The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ibraheem AlQurashi built this house on the foundation of traditional Arabian perfumery, where oud, incense, and amber form the spiritual core of every composition. Black Diamond Incense arrived in 2023 as the house's statement piece, a fragrance that embodies the tension between contemporary freshness and ancient ritual. The perfumer chose to open with aquatic notes and blackcurrant, deliberately subverting expectations of what an incense-focused fragrance should be. This cold, bright beginning creates contrast against the sacred, smoky heart that follows.
The note structure reflects a philosophy of contrast. Aquatic notes and blackcurrant at the opening serve a specific purpose: they make the eventual smoky intensity feel earned and dramatic. Frankincense and sandalwood form the aromatic heart because they bridge the gap between freshness and depth. The base combines leather, oud, smoke, and amber because these materials share an ability to create lasting presence. Each note exists to serve the narrative arc rather than simply adding complexity.
The evolution
The fragrance begins its narrative with cool aquatic notes and tart blackcurrant, a surprisingly fresh start for a scent named after incense. Birch adds an understated green quality that bridges the gap between the watery opening and the aromatic heart. Within the first fifteen minutes, frankincense enters with its distinctive resinous smoke, while sandalwood and vanilla create warmth and creaminess. This transition from cool fruit to sacred incense feels dramatic and intentional. The drydown takes over completely, with leather, oud, smoke, and amber creating a dense, smoky cloud that lingers for hours. The progression tells a story of something cold and mineral becoming warm and spiritual.
Cultural impact
Black Diamond Incense showcases a particular approach to layered composition that rewards patience. Rather than leading with dense, heavy notes from the first spray, this one unfolds in stages, opening fresh and bright, warming through the heart, and arriving at darker territory only as the wearing progresses. Wearers describe it as the kind of fragrance that creates a second impression: the opening is pleasant and inviting, but the drydown is what becomes memorable.
