The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Il Piacere arrived in mid-2017 as the debut scent of I Profumi di d'Annunzio, an Italian house founded to translate Gabriele d'Annunzio's poetry into wearable art. Perfumer Carlo Ribero was tasked with turning the poet's dramatic verses into an olfactory vignette, capturing a fleeting moment of refined indulgence. The name, meaning the pleasure, suggests something sensory and transient, a brief escape from ordinary life. Ribero chose mate as the leading note, a less common material in perfumery that carries both bitterness and a distinctive herbal character. This choice signals immediately that the fragrance prioritizes character over comfort, literary ambition over conventional beauty.
The choice of mate as the opening note reflects a philosophy of unexpected materials. Rather than relying on conventional citrus or bergamot, the perfumer selected something with more edge, more personality. Neroli provides necessary brightness without gentling the composition entirely. Jasmine bridges the gap between the aromatic opening and the woody heart, its sensual quality threading through to the final notes. The heart notes, guaiac wood and cypriol, are inherently warm and earthy, designed to create intimacy rather than announce presence. Rose adds romantic dimension without tipping the composition into cliché. Musk grounds everything, ensuring the drydown feels personal rather than theatrical.
The evolution
The fragrance unfolds across three distinct chapters. Mate opens with green intensity, quickly joined by neroli's clean brightness and jasmine's sensual warmth. The tension between bitter and sweet defines the first act. As the composition moves forward, guaiac wood introduces smoky depth while cypriol adds earthy complexity, and rose softens the ruggedness with romantic floralcy. This is not a linear progression but a deliberate orchestration of contrasts. The drydown strips away the complexity, leaving only musk: clean, warm, skin-close. Each phase has its own personality, yet all belong to the same narrative, each note contributing to a story that resolves with quiet intimacy.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 debut, Il Piacere has become a quiet favorite among niche collectors who appreciate its literary roots and the unexpected mate-tea opening. Critics note its ability to bridge fresh aromatic vigor with a warm, musky drydown, positioning it as a bridge between contemporary gourmand trends and classic Italian elegance.
