The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Olivia Giacobetti created Chaman's Party in 2008 for Honore des Pres. The brand has developed a reputation for unexpected fragrance names, from I Love Les Carottes to Vamp a NY, treating each release as an opportunity to subvert expectations. Giacobetti built something that genuinely smells undiscovered, a scent that conjures places outside the ordinary catalog of perfume references. The composition draws the wearer into a world of green herbs, warm spice, and woody depth, creating an olfactory experience that feels both familiar and strange. There's an earthy, grounded quality to the blend that resists easy categorization, suggesting forests and fields rather than the polished displays of conventional perfumery.
What makes Chaman's Party unusual is the way it combines materials that rarely share space. Haitian vetiver and Egyptian basil anchor the top notes, while Madagascan clove brings warmth to the heart. Venezuelan gaiac wood adds smoky, woody depth, and hay provides an organic, plant-like quality that grounds the composition. The ingredients don't attempt to blend into seamless harmony. Instead, each element maintains its own character, creating a scent that feels alive and dynamic rather than polished and predictable.
The evolution
The opening hits fast: basil and vetiver arrive together, green and rooty, with the clove lurking just underneath. Within minutes the hay asserts itself, not sweet hay, not hay in a barn, but the dense, slightly damp hay of forest floor mulch. As the initial burst fades, the composition shifts. The guaiac wood begins to emerge, bringing smoke and dry warmth. By this point the fragrance has settled into something quieter but more complex: animalic, earthy notes rise as the sweeter elements recede, with the faint warmth of clove still present in the background. The drydown on fabric reads as smoky wood and damp earth, lingering for several hours on linen and cotton.
Cultural impact
Chaman's Party occupies a distinctive place in niche perfumery, a fragrance that genuinely smells like its concept rather than using the concept as marketing copy. The natural ingredients used in the composition create a particular quality that synthetic materials might not replicate. This approach results in a fragrance that feels organic and alive, with a complexity that rewards close attention.
