The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Heretic's 2025 release is a deliberate love letter to the goth community, a subculture that has always known the beauty of things that burn. Douglas Little built this fragrance around the clove cigarette, specifically the Djarum variety that carries a characteristic smoky-sweet intensity. Blonde tobacco provides the body, clove and singed vanilla deliver the heat. The result is a fragrance that wears its influences openly: nighttime, leather, the exhale after.
What makes this composition unusual is the raw realism of the clove. Most fragrances use clove as a supporting spice, here it anchors the entire structure. The apricot and orris root don't soften it into something palatable; they add dimension without apology. Birch tar keeps the smoke honest rather than decorative. This is not a romanticized version of the moment. It is the moment, unfiltered.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately, a cloud of clove smoke and cypriol that reads as literally as a burning clove cigarette. No metaphor. This phase lasts longer than comfort allows, which is the point. The apricot arrives quietly, settling beneath the smoke like sweetness trying not to be noticed. The orris root adds powdery depth. Then, gradually, vanilla and labdanum take over, warm, resinous, finally forgiving. The birch tar doesn't disappear. It deepens. Settles into the composition like a secret. On fabric, this one outlasts everything else you own.
Cultural impact
Midnight Toker positions itself as a love letter to the goth community, a subculture that has always understood the appeal of things that burn. The smoky-sweet clove cigarette profile isn't attempting mass appeal. It's a statement: this is for people who already know. The fragrance has found its audience through word-of-mouth among those who recognize the reference and appreciate its unapologetic directness.
