The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Henry Rose launched in 2019 with a radical commitment to ingredient transparency and EWG Verified safety standards, proving that disclosure and fine fragrance craft are not mutually exclusive. For Menace, released in 2023, the brand partnered with perfumer Yves Cassar to capture a specific atmospheric tension, building a fragrance that moves from bright citrus into cooler aquatic woods before anchoring in warm, earthy depths. The brief called for contrast: sharp opening, calm heart, grounded finish. Cassar delivered exactly that, using mastic resin to bridge the gap between the zesty lime and mandarin orange and the cooler heart notes that follow.
The note selection in Menace reflects a deliberate philosophy of contrast and balance. Lime and mandarin orange provide immediate impact and accessibility, while mastic resin adds a less common aromatic dimension that elevates the opening beyond a standard citrus scent. The pairing of aquatic notes with cypress in the heart creates a cool, atmospheric quality that feels specific rather than generic. The drydown of patchouli, cedarwood, and musk grounds the fragrance in warmth and longevity, ensuring the scent evolves on skin rather than simply fading. This layering reflects Henry Rose's commitment to transparency: every note serves a structural purpose, and nothing is included for mere novelty.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a three-pronged citrus assault led by lime, supported by mandarin orange, and given subtle resinous depth by mastic. This bright, sharp introduction lasts roughly fifteen minutes before the heart takes over. Aquatic notes and cypress then form the core narrative, creating a cool, airy middle ground that feels neither floral nor spicy. As the heart notes begin to fade after two hours, the drydown emerges with cedarwood and patchouli providing earthy, woody weight while musk adds a soft, intimate warmth that lingers on skin for several more hours. The arc is deliberate and satisfying, moving from brightness through coolness into warmth.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 debut, Menace has been noted for delivering a clean, marine‑citrus fougère that aligns with the growing demand for transparent, hypoallergenic scents. Wearers often cite its fresh seaside vibe as a modern alternative to traditional masculine colognes, positioning it as a go‑to for those who value both performance and ingredient honesty.
