The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ortensia Fico belongs to Helan's Racconti Fioriti collection. The name itself does the descriptive work, pointing to two specific botanical references: ortensia, the hydrangea, and fico, the fig tree. Together they form the conceptual spine of the composition, a fragrance that reads as a small vignette rather than an abstract perfume. This is scent built around two plants, and the quiet tension between them. Helan constructs Ortensia Fico with full commitment to that idea, letting the fig and the hydrangea carry the narrative without dilution from unrelated accords. The result feels like a fragment of a larger garden lifted intact and pressed into a bottle, no embellishment, no reinterpretation, just the two plants and the air around them.
What makes the composition work is the layering of fig across all three phases. The leaf opens with a sharp, verdant bite, and fig wood anchors the base for a grounded finish. The effect holds the scent together as one continuous thread rather than a disconnected list of notes. The hortensia moves through the top and heart, lending its characteristic white floral softness without tipping into anything cloying. Artemisia adds an herbal counterweight to the composition, a green, slightly bitter note that grounds the florals and keeps them from drifting into pure sweetness.
The evolution
The opening smells like crushed fig leaves held close, sharp with artemisia's bitter green character and the cool, almost watery quality that hydrangea brings to the top accord. There's a bruised-leaf realism to the first impression, vegetal and immediate rather than polite or decorative. As the composition develops, jasmine arrives with a warm, creamy presence, and the overall character shifts from green to something softer and more floral. The fig note deepens, moving away from the leafy sharpness of the opening and heading toward something closer to fruit, though it never fully ripens on the skin. Eventually the white florals recede and heliotrope begins its slow takeover, powdery and almond-sweet, settling into the composition with quiet authority. The amber underneath never pushes hard. It glows rather than blazes, offering warmth without weight.
Cultural impact
Ortensia Fico sits in Helan's Racconti Fioriti line, a grouping oriented around garden plants translated into wearable compositions. One plant, fig, repeats across all three phases of the fragrance, while another, hydrangea, bridges the top and heart notes. The structure gives the scent a botanical coherence, each phase connected to the same source material rather than shifting into unrelated territory. The result is a composition that rewards close attention, the fig and the hydrangea weaving in and out of each other across the wear, building a continuous narrative from a limited palette of ingredients.
