The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Alchemist's Garden arrived in January 2019 as Gucci's first haute couture perfumery line, a collection built on the idea that fragrance could function as raw material, not just finished product. Fading Autumn emerged as the woody pillar of that concept: an acqua profumata designed not to stand alone but to enhance. Alberto Morillas, who had already shaped Gucci Bloom for the House, approached this differently, less statement, more substance. The name came first: an autumn in retreat, not a peak. What follows is the olfactory translation of that idea.
The four materials, cypriol, cedar, patchouli, sandalwood, form a complete woody skeleton with no top notes, no florals, no brightness to soften the structure. Cypriol (nagarmotha) brings an earthy, almost naphthalene-like dryness that cedar amplifies into clean sawdust. Patchouli anchors with its characteristic depth, while sandalwood does what sandalwood does: softens the edges, adds warmth, keeps the whole thing wearable rather than austere. The absence of a traditional opening note, that first bright impression most fragrances lead with, is the point. This is a base layer. A canvas.
The evolution
Without a traditional top note, the evolution reads differently. Cypriol and cedar arrive simultaneously, woody and dry, with cypriol's characteristic earthiness giving the composition its unusual edge. Cedar dominates the first hour, clean, resinous, slightly sharp. Patchouli arrives around the 30-minute mark, not sweet but deep, and the composition shifts from sharp-woody to round-woody. Sandalwood takes over in the drydown, warming everything, turning the edges soft. What lingers is the sandalwood-patchouli combination: intimate, skin-close, the kind of scent you'd only notice if you leaned in. Moderate sillage throughout. Lasts 4-6 hours on most skin.
Cultural impact
Fading Autumn occupies a specific niche: the layering fragrance for those who already own Gucci scents. Community reception acknowledges this positioning, some wearers dismiss it as weak or short-lived, but those who understand its function as an acqua profumata find value in its woody simplicity. The 4-6 hour longevity works for its intended use as a base layer rather than a primary fragrance. It's not trying to compete with the concentration of Gucci Guilty or the lushness of Gucci Bloom, it's a supporting element in a fragrance wardrobe.
