The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nelly Hachem-Ruiz designed Sable Or for the Armani Privé collection in 2015, drawing from sand and sea as her source material. Mineral and warm. The result is a fragrance that captures that tension between sharpness and softness. Two limited editions emerged from that concept: Sable Or and Sable Fume, each pulling the same inspiration in different directions. Sable Or leans into powdery warmth, building from mineral-fresh violet toward iris and vanilla. The name says it all: sand and gold, the beach at golden hour. There's a quiet richness here, a golden hour glow that lingers on the skin.
What makes this composition interesting is the opening. Mineral notes and violet are an unusual pairing, violet is typically soft, powdery, introvert. Mineral is sharp, cool, almost clinical. Together they create an opening that feels like sea air hitting warm skin. It doesn't behave like a typical oriental. The powdery character comes from the iris, specifically Florentine iris, which has a rootier, more buttery quality than other irises. Tonka bean and vanilla in the heart amplify the warmth without pushing it into sweetness. The result is a fragrance that smells warm but stays close to the skin. Not a statement. A signature.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast, mineral sharpness cutting through before violet's powdery softness settles in. The transition to the heart phase brings iris pushing through, turning from green and sharp to creamy and powdery as it develops. Sandalwood and tonka bean join the conversation, adding depth and texture. The cacao adds a dark, almost bitter sweetness that keeps the heart from getting too soft, creating an interesting tension between creamy and sharp. This middle phase holds its own, the iris and sandalwood carrying the composition with an elegant persistence. The drydown is quiet. Sandalwood and vanilla together create something that stays intimate, close, present without being intrusive. Warmth that lingers in fabric, wrapping around the wearer like a soft embrace.
