The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Future Society launched in the United Kingdom in 2023 with an ambitious goal: to resurrect the scents of extinct ecosy stems through the intersection of molecular biology and perfumery. Floating Forest emerged from their founding mission, driven by the desire to reconstruct a vanished temperate woodland. Working with DNA extracted from centuries-old herbarium samples, Future Society asked Jérôme Epinette to translate genetic data into a living fragrance. Bergamot and black pepper were selected for their crisp, green qualities, while water lily, freesia, and rose represented the delicate florals of a lost canopy. The drydown of cedarwood, driftwood, salt, and mineral notes grounds the composition in the essential character of that vanished habitat. The result is a fragrance that feels like stepping into a memory of a forest that no longer exists.
The note selection for Floating Forest was guided by a specific philosophy: each material had to reflect a real element of the extinct temperate woodland. Bergamot and black pepper represent the crisp, green energy of the canopy edge. Water lily, freesia, and rose were chosen not for their commercial appeal but for their ability to evoke a floating, suspended atmosphere, a forest garden suspended above water. Cedarwood, driftwood, and papyrus anchor the composition in natural material, the structural memory of wood and bark.
The evolution
The scent opens with bergamot and black pepper, a pairing that delivers clean, sparkling citrus with a faint spicy edge. There is no heaviness here, only crispness and immediate refreshment. Within minutes, the heart takes over as water lily rises with its cool, still-water quality, while freesia adds a translucent floral brightness and rose provides a whisper of warmth beneath the surface. The transition feels organic, like moving deeper into a forest where light softens and the air becomes cooler. As the florals begin to settle, cedarwood and driftwood emerge, adding warmth and organic weight. Papyrus arrives quietly, introducing an earthy, slightly dry texture that echoes ancient botanical specimens. Salt and mineral notes then assert themselves, pulling the composition back toward a cool, aquatic mineral atmosphere that feels like the shore of a forest pool. The drydown lingers with quiet persistence, leaving a trace of mineral freshness and salt-tinged wood that evokes the border between water and forest.
Cultural impact
Since its debut, Floating Forest has sparked conversation among collectors for its uncanny ability to evoke a forest that never grew, turning scent into a dialogue about memory and climate. Wearers often remark that the pepper‑driven opening and mineral drydown set it apart from typical green aquatics, making it a talking point at niche fragrance gatherings and online forums.
