The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Borntostandout was built around the idea of forbidden romance, the second love that changes everything. Valerie Garnuch-Mentzel translated that tension into scent: bergamot opening like the first flutter of attraction, then geranium to keep it grounded. The heart is where the intrigue lives, rose with black pepper, pomarose adding a distinctive sweetness that feels almost addictive. It's cheeky by design. This story is about risk: the kind that comes with wanting something you probably shouldn't.
The akigalawood in the heart is unusual, a material that blends gaiac wood with patchouli, giving the rose a dark, almost resinous quality. Black pepper adds a notable spice element. Downstairs, the tobacco and leather don't announce themselves immediately. They wait. By the third hour, when the top notes have fully dispersed, that's when the smoky, leathery heart of the fragrance emerges. At 30-40% concentration, the drydown isn't a whisper. It's a statement.
The evolution
The opening hits with bergamot giving you that sharp citrus brightness, immediate, inviting, before the geranium arrives with its herbal, almost medicinal edge. Think of it as the flirtation phase: confident, a little knowing. Thirty minutes in, the geranium softens and the rose steps forward, threaded with black pepper and akigalawood. The composition shifts from fresh to warm, from cool to committed. The pepper doesn't sting, it wakes you up. The rose doesn't flounce, it means business. By the second hour, the florals have settled and the base materials are taking over. Cedarwood arrives first, dry, almost austere, followed by tobacco. The amber adds a faint sweetness that softens the drydown. Leather is present but worn close, like a jacket that fits perfectly and has seen some things.
Cultural impact
Borntostandout occupies a distinctive space in contemporary fragrance, with an unusual akigalawood note that sets it apart. The name reflects the intent: a scent designed for those who appreciate intensity and originality in their fragrance choices. The combination of rose, pepper, and akigalawood creates something that stands apart from more conventional compositions.
