The Story
Why it exists.
Fugazzi went to Brazil and came back with this. Not a research trip, a feeling. The energy of a place where the ocean hits stone and people have been living in that heat for generations. Perfumer Ilias Ermenidis built the composition around that specific moment: the brightness of fruit growing in热带空气, the warmth that rises off black tea at midday, the spice that arrives when you least expect it. This is what Ipanema smells like to someone who actually lives there, not the tourist version, the real one.

The Beginning
Fugazzi went to Brazil and came back with this. Not a research trip, a feeling. The energy of a place where the ocean hits stone and people have been living in that heat for generations. Perfumer Ilias Ermenidis built the composition around that specific moment: the brightness of fruit growing in热带空气, the warmth that rises off black tea at midday, the spice that arrives when you least expect it. This is what Ipanema smells like to someone who actually lives there, not the tourist version, the real one.
Four top notes is unusual, most tropical fragrances lean on one dominant fruit and build around it. Passionfroudh opens with all four firing at once: passion fruit's tartness, mango's sweetness, ginger's clean bite, and black tea's tannic structure holding the whole thing in place. It's not chaos. It's precision. The four notes cancel each other's weaknesses and amplify their strengths. Then the heart arrives: gurjan balsam and black pepper. Resinous, warm, slightly medicinal. The tropical opening wasn't the point. It was the setup.
The Evolution
The opening hits fast, passion fruit, mango, ginger, black tea all arriving within the first thirty seconds. It's bright. Almost shockingly so. Then the honey-like quality of the passion fruit starts to sweeten everything further, and for a moment this could go very wrong, too syrupy, too obvious. But the black tea keeps it grounded. The ginger doesn't let it get soft. Five minutes in, the hand-off happens. Black pepper and gurjan balsam arrive, warm, resinous, slightly medicinal. The tropical sweetness doesn't disappear. It recedes. Becomes a memory underneath the growing darkness. The scent shifts from fruit market to something earthier, more grounded. Over the next two to three hours, the base does its work. Oud Assafi and cypriol build slowly, smoky, woody, almost leathery. The tropical notes are still there, whispering underneath, but the oud has taken over. This is where the fragrance becomes itself. Not tropical anymore. Not fruity. Something more complex: warm, smoky, close-to-skin. The kind of drydown you find again the next morning on your wrist.
Cultural Impact
Passionfroudh sits at an unusual intersection: tropical freshness and smoky depth. Where most tropical fragrances lean into beach-day simplicity, this one opens bright and becomes something darker. The oud doesn't hide, it's right there alongside the mango, keeping the sweetness honest. That unconventional pairing is what separates it from the同类. It's bold enough to polarize, interesting enough to pull people back.
The House
Netherlands · Est. 2018
Amsterdam-born fragrance house built on instinct over formula. Founded in 2018 by Bram Niessink, Fugazzi pairs playful luxury with high-concentration compositions, creating unisex scents that tell stories rather than follow trends. Their concept of 'storysmelling' treats fragrance as an emotional narrative, not just a product. Known for bold pairings, generous oil percentages, and a refusal to play it safe.

Warm Brazilian nights. The air is thick with salt and something sweeter underneath, the kind of evening where time moves slower and the city hums at a frequency you can almost touch. Not the tourist version. The real one.
