The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Areej means 'scent' in Arabic, reflecting the fragrance's purpose: to map a journey through scented woods. In 2020, perfumer Shadi Samra set out to blend Fragrance Du Bois's ethically sourced Indian oud with bright bergamot and rose, creating a sweet-oriental portrait that feels both modern and rooted in tradition. The pairing of effervescent citrus with a deeply resinous oud creates immediate contrast, while the floral heart softens the transition between the two.
The choice of bergamot and rose for the opening reflects a desire to make oud approachable from the first spray. Rather than opening with the resinous weight of oud, Areej invites the wearer in with citrus-floral brightness before revealing the deeper heart and base. The caramel and vanilla in the drydown extend the warmth initiated in the heart, creating a coherent narrative of sweetness threaded through woody complexity.
The evolution
The fragrance unfolds like a progression through scent families, beginning with bergamot's citrus spark and rose's delicate floral note before moving into caramel's warm sweetness punctuated by violet's powdery character and woody depth. The drydown represents the journey's destination: a rich alliance of cashmere wood, guaiac wood, and oud, finished with vanilla's lingering sweetness. Each phase flows naturally into the next, building from brightness to warmth, from lightness to depth.
Cultural impact
Since its 2020 debut, Areej has become a quiet favorite among oud enthusiasts who appreciate a sweeter, more approachable take on the traditionally smoky wood. Wearers often cite its caramel‑vanilla heart as a conversation starter at evening gatherings, while its strong sillage makes it noticeable without overwhelming, positioning it as a modern bridge between gourmand and classic oriental palettes.
