The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cherry Wonderland arrived in 2023 from FOOPE, the Toronto fragrance house built on the idea that scent should feel like play, not obligation. Perfumer Julie Pluchet constructed this around a tension: take the familiar pleasure of black cherry and pull it in unexpected directions with rum's warmth, aniseed's sharpness, and cardamom's heat. The result isn't a fruity fragrance that plays it straight, it complicates the cherry, gives it depth and a slight edge. FOOPE's philosophy of accessible self-expression through scent finds its fullest expression here: a fragrance that invites you to like something slightly harder than expected.
What makes this composition interesting is how the cherry doesn't behave. The opening pairs it with rum, already an unusual alliance, and then introduces aniseed and cardamom, spices that could easily overwhelm a lighter fruit note. Instead, they frame it. The cherry becomes the centerpiece of something warmer and stranger than a straightforward fruity fragrance. As it moves into the heart, violet introduces a powdery softness that could tip the whole thing into sweetness, but patchouli and oak wood pull back, keeping the composition earthy and grounded.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly. Black cherry arrives bright and tart, almost immediate, backed by rum's sweetness and the sharp warmth of aniseed and cardamom. Sweet orange adds a brief citrus lift before the composition settles. This first thirty minutes is the fragrance's most accessible phase, fruity, warm, inviting. The hand-off to the heart is gradual. Violet appears quietly, introducing a powdery floral note that tempers the fruit's sweetness. Patchouli and oak wood arrive underneath, shifting the composition from bright to grounded. The cherry doesn't disappear, it transforms, becoming something deeper, less playful. By the mid-drydown, the top notes have fully resolved. Labdanum and frankincense take over, their resinous balsamic quality dominating the composition. Sandalwood anchors everything, keeping the drydown warm and woody. Moss, if your skin holds it long enough, adds an earthy undertone that extends the fragrance's complexity. On most skin types, Cherry Wonderland lasts four to six hours, with moderate sillage, present but not overwhelming.
Cultural impact
Cherry Wonderland arrived in 2023 during a broader cherry fragrance revival that saw dark fruit notes shed their youthful associations and enter sophisticated niche territory. FOOPE positioned this release alongside other playful-yet-complex compositions that challenged traditional gender boundaries in fragrance. The blend of black cherry with rum and aniseed speaks to a growing appetite for unconventional combinations that feel simultaneously familiar and surprising. Since its debut, Cherry Wonderland has found its audience among wearers seeking fragrance as self-expression rather than mere pleasantry. The 2023 launch reflects a moment when consumers increasingly value distinctive scent profiles over safe, universally pleasing options.
