The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Acquarossa arrived in 2013 as Fendi's vision for a Roman-inspired fragrance, featuring bright citruses and rich red notes. Three perfumers, Benoist Lapouza, François Demachy, and Delphine Lebeau, collaborated on the original creation. In 2014 the Maison returned with a lighter interpretation of the same scent profile. The 2014 EDT retains the core architecture while introducing greater luminosity and openness. The Italian citruses, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian mandarin, present more cleanly on initial application, with Sichuan pepper providing a subtle sharpness that lifts the composition without overwhelming it. The floral heart remains present but breathes more freely in this version.
The Sichuan pepper plays a distinctive role in this citrus-floral composition. It keeps the opening feeling genuine and direct, without synthetic smoothness or artificial rounding. Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian mandarin provide a sunny citrus foundation, while the Sichuan pepper introduces an unexpected element that adds character to the top notes. West Indian lantana occupies an interesting space in the heart of the fragrance.
The evolution
The opening is immediate and bright, featuring Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian mandarin with a Sichuan pepper note that adds clarity and direction to the initial burst of citrus. The citrus accord maintains its presence while gradually allowing other elements to emerge. The florals take their turn as the composition evolves, with peony appearing first and contributing sweetness before violet joins with its characteristic powdery undertone. The lantana contributes a subtle herbal quality that keeps the heart from becoming too gentle, adding dimension to the floral character. This middle phase represents the heart of the L'Acquarossa experience, with Italian citrus, florals, and that persistent spiced undercurrent working in concert. As time passes, the cedar becomes more prominent, its dry woody character emerging as the florals recede.
Cultural impact
The 2014 EDT arrived during a period when heritage fashion houses were exploring fragrance creation with renewed attention. L'Acquarossa draws on specific materials, including Sichuan pepper and lantana, that distinguish it from more conventional citrus-floral compositions. The campaign featured Chiara Mastroianni, whose artistic background aligned with the fragrance's positioning. For wearers seeking alternatives to mainstream floral fragrances, the Sichuan pepper element offers an interesting point of differentiation worth exploring.
