The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
West is composed by Andreas Wilhelm as a unisex eau de parfum. Its opening gathers water, chamomile, grapefruit, and juniper, balancing coolness with herbal clarity. Juniper contributes a dry, resinous snap, while chamomile lends a softly herbal character alongside the brighter citrus and water notes. The structure then moves toward galbanum and tonka bean: galbanum adds a greener, mineral edge, and tonka bean brings warmth beneath the cooler opening. In the base, ambergris, Iso E Super, orange blossom, and sandalwood create a smooth, gently warm foundation. As the scent develops, the watery notes recede gradually, leaving a close, mineral, and woody impression that remains balanced by ambergris and orange blossom.
The composition's character comes from friction. Aquatic notes and grapefruit bring air and brightness, while chamomile adds an herbal texture to the opening. Juniper contributes a resinous, woody snap, and galbanum gives the heart a greener, more mineral edge. Tonka bean introduces warmth underneath that coolness, creating a subtle contrast between herbaceous notes and a softly sweet base. As the fragrance settles, orange blossom and sandalwood soften the structure, while ambergris and Iso E Super contribute a smooth character.
The evolution
The first impression is the cleanest: aquatic notes, grapefruit, and chamomile create a cool, airy opening. Juniper soon adds definition, a dry green line that keeps the opening from becoming simple freshness. During the heart, galbanum brings a sharper resinous character, while tonka bean lays down a gentle sweetness. The transition matters. The water recedes, but it doesn't vanish entirely; it becomes a cool haze around the warmer woods. In the drydown, sandalwood and Iso E Super carry the composition with soft structure, supported by ambergris and orange blossom. On skin, the result stays close and smooth. As it wears, the citrus-like brightness of grapefruit gives way to the greener character of juniper and galbanum, followed by tonka bean's warmth. The final impression remains mineral, woody, and gently warm.
Cultural impact
West's compass-based name gives its composition a distinct cultural shorthand for direction and movement. Its watery profile is balanced by juniper, galbanum, tonka bean, ambergris, Iso E Super, orange blossom, and sandalwood, placing freshness and warmth within a single scent. The name invites an exploratory reading, while the progression from cool water and grapefruit to resinous greenery and warm woods gives the fragrance a clear sense of development.
