Why it exists.
The beginning
XXX Cyprium arrived in 2021 as part of Zegna's XXX Collection, composed by Alexis Grugeon. The name points at copper, at material, at something forged. It's a woody composition that reads elemental rather than decorative, built around cedar, charcoal, and a violet note that refuses to behave like a flower.
What's unusual here is the structural choice: violet alongside lava and copper isn't a floral accord pretending to be tough. It's a violet that's been stripped of its sweetness and pressed into something cooler, almost metallic. Grugeon treats it as a bridge between the herbaceous sharpness at the top and the smoldering resinous base. The cedar does the anchoring. The whole thing reads less like a perfume and more like a material study.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes lean into the mineral. Copper and charcoal do most of the talking, with violet threading through like cold water over warm stone. There is a quiet smokiness, not cigarette smoke, more the smell of embers that have been banked for hours. By the second hour, the cedar arrives properly. It's Atlas cedar, dry, structural, the kind that smells like a plank pulled from a mountain shed. The herbs settle underneath, herbal in the green-tea sense, slightly bitter, giving the whole composition a dry backbone. At hour four the violet has almost vanished, replaced by a warm, woody close that clings to fabric. On skin, the scent behaves like a slow-burning composition, steady rather than fleeting, never shouting.

Wearers describe Cyprium as the scent of someone who doesn't need to announce himself. It's a woody that gets noticed for what it isn't: not sweet, not loud, not trying.
