The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Roman Wood, crafted by perfumer Dora Baghriche-Arnaud, reaches for something elemental: the spirit of Italian conifers, a fragrant material that brings quiet depth to the composition. The name says it plainly. Four types of wood form the structure: cypress leads the opening, stone pine anchors the heart, and cedar with pine absolute hold the base. Herbaceous freshness opens the composition, sage and rosemary adding their aromatic quality, while warmth wraps the drydown and gives the fragrance its lasting character. The result is unmistakably Italian in character, carrying the light and warmth of the Mediterranean hillside into scent form.
The conifer material in Roman Wood brings four distinct wood types into the composition, each contributing something different. Stone pine occupies the heart, offering a character that is harder to find than cedar or pine alone. The herbal opening combines sage, rosemary, and cypress, their aromatic qualities reading like the clean scent of fresh herbs in open air. Bergamot keeps the opening from feeling too austere, adding a bright citrus lift that opens up the blend. Moss adds earthy depth in the heart, providing contrast to the brighter notes above.
The evolution
The opening lands with bergamot, then rosemary cutting through with clean sharpness. The herbal quality deepens quickly, sage arriving to join the blend, cypress asserting itself and giving the air a conifer-like crispness. That crisp, aromatic character signals exactly what this fragrance is about. The heart phase introduces cedarwood alongside the stone pine, moss providing an earthy counterpoint that keeps everything grounded. This is where Roman Wood feels most grounded and natural, green and alive. As the fragrance develops, the drydown takes over. Pine absolute becomes more prominent, amber warmth building beneath it. Vanilla appears, but it is never dominant, serving as a softening agent for the conifer intensity. The final phase is a soft trail of pine and amber that stays intimate and close, creating warmth and presence that lingers.
Cultural impact
Roman Wood received recognition at the 2021 Fragrance of the Year Men's Luxury award. It appeals to those who appreciate something beyond conventional masculine scents, a composition built on restraint and material quality. The award highlights the fragrance's sophisticated approach to woody notes and its ability to offer depth without relying on traditional masculine scent conventions.
