The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Essenze collection treats each ingredient as a fabric unto itself, a material to be cut, layered, and finished with intention. Indonesian Oud arrived as the house's most direct statement on one of perfumery's most storied materials. The brief was clear: oud from Indonesia, paired with complementary notes that amplify rather than obscure the wood's natural complexity. Bergamot for brightness, rose for warmth, amber and patchouli to build the structure that holds everything in place. Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud and Richard Herpin collaborated on the creation, bringing together their expertise to translate this vision into a wearable composition.
What makes this composition work is the balance between dark and light. Oud carries an inherent weight, resinous, almost animalic, capable of dominating a formula. Here, the bergamot at the opening cuts through that density, letting the rose and amber soften the edges before the oud settles into its long, earthy drydown. The result is a fragrance that feels neither aggressive nor timid. It earns its darkness through restraint rather than volume. Indonesian patchouli grounds the base without adding heaviness, a subtle distinction that separates this from heavier oud compositions on the market.
The evolution
The bergamot hits first, a sharp, clean brightness that quickly gives way as rose and amberwood arrive to warm the composition. At the heart, the oud announces itself without demanding attention, carrying a natural sweetness almost like dark honey over burning wood. Patchouli and amber settle closest to the skin while the oud lingers, resinous and deep, projected at arm's length rather than across the room. The oud can last well into the following day on fabric, a faint, intimate warmth that refuses to fully disappear. On skin, the full drydown holds for hours, quieter but insistent.
Cultural impact
Indonesian Oud sits at an accessible tier for wearers who want the depth of niche oud compositions without the intensity that makes them difficult to integrate into daily wear. The Essenze collection uses color-coding by ingredient, and the amber-brown tone of this bottle signals its depth before the cap is ever opened. The visual language gives wearers an immediate sense of what awaits, communicating the woody-oriental character through a single glance at the shelf. Positive reception has made it a consistent entry point for those curious about oud.
