The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Electimuss London operates as a founder-owned, independent house with a singular aesthetic drawn from Roman imperial codes, classical mythology, and Mediterranean ritual. Each fragrance in the Eternal collection carries the weight of an emperor's legacy, and Trajan is no exception. Named for the ruler whose empire stretched across the Silk Route, this scent channels the trade routes that brought spices, resins, and exotic materials into Roman hands. Marco Genovese was tasked with building a fragrance that embodied both conquest and culture, and he reached for warm citrus and saffron as his primary materials.
The note philosophy here centers on contrast: bright citrus against warm spice, herbaceous green against animalic salt, dry wood against earthy moss. Genovese selected each material not for novelty but for structural function within the Trajan narrative. The citrus represents the empire's reach across the Mediterranean; the saffron evokes the Silk Route trade that enriched Roman coffers; the ambergris and oakmoss ground the fragrance in natural, tactile reality. This is a composition built on historical resonance, where each note carries meaning beyond its scent.
The evolution
The opening begins with four citrus materials in concert: orange, bergamot, lemon, and mandarin orange create a bright, multi-faceted citrus burst that feels sunlit and immediate. As the initial sharpness softens, the saffron appears in the heart alongside sage and lavender, introducing a warm, slightly bitter, herbaceous complexity that signals the fragrance's shift toward spice. The drydown is where Trajan earns its imperial name: ambergris provides a salty, animalic warmth; cedarwood contributes dry, pencil-shaving woodiness; oakmoss adds earthy, mossy depth that grounds the entire composition and ensures longevity on skin.
Cultural impact
Trajan has earned its place in the niche fragrance conversation by occupying territory that many mainstream houses avoid, warm citrus with genuine complexity in the heart and a drydown that rewards patience. Its ambergris warmth draws comparisons to compositions like Baccarat Rouge 540 while maintaining a distinctly spicier, more characterful profile. The fragrance develops into something with real staying power and depth over time.
