The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dries Van Noten entered the fragrance world in 2022 through a partnership with Puig. The Art of Contrast collection comprised ten fragrances, with Louise Turner assigned to Raving Rose. Turner worked from the brand's creative direction. The composition centers on rose, with pepper providing contrast. Damask rose absolute carries the weight, while rose water keeps the scent fresh and almost aqueous. Turner approached the material with care, building a fragrance where the floral element maintains its presence throughout the wearing experience. The pepper element serves as more than decoration, threading through the composition to keep the rose from settling into predictable territory.
Cashmeran appears as a quiet material in the formula. Rather than anchoring the rose in something obvious, Turner selected this synthetic to provide warmth without adding weight or sweetness. It contributes presence to the base without creating mass. Musk adds another layer, enhancing skin warmth and giving the sensation that the fragrance emanates from within rather than sitting on the surface. The combination of cashmeran and musk in the drydown creates a distinct effect. Raving Rose stays close, stays warm, stays rose, without ever becoming heavy or cloying.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly. Pink pepper and black pepper arrive together, creating a bright, sharp note on skin. The effect is clean and clear, with the spiced element establishing itself before the rose begins to show. The relationship between the two elements develops as the scent moves through its stages. The damask rose absolute brings opulence and richness, with the depth of rose paste rather than lighter rose petals. Rose water keeps the composition grounded, preventing it from climbing too high. As the hours pass, the floral notes begin to thin and the cashmeran-musketone emerges. This is where the fragrance shifts from something bold to something intimate. The drydown sits close to the skin, warm in the way skin itself is warm, present but not projecting.
Cultural impact
Raving Rose enters a rose-dominated market as part of the Art of Contrast collection of ten scents. The composition emphasizes rose with pepper as a counterpoint, avoiding excessive sweetness or powder. The launch placed the brand among other rose fragrances, positioning it as a fashion house with genuine fragrance credentials rather than merely a fashion label extending into scents. The approach reflects the brand's broader design philosophy, bringing the same attention to material and contrast that characterizes its clothing to the fragrance medium.
