The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Victresse arrived in 2023, composed by Alexandre Illan. The note pyramid reflects that ambition: frankincense, black pepper, and rosewood open sharp and commanding, while rose oil, styrax, and guaiac wood build a heart that refuses to soften into background music. The frankincense brings an ancient, meditative quality, its smoke curling through the composition like incense in a cathedral. Black pepper adds a bright, almost citrusy bite that cuts through the heavier elements. Rosewood contributes a subtle floral-woody undertone that grounds the opening without dulling its edge.
What makes Victresse interesting is the frankincense-black pepper pairing. One offers smoke, resin, the weight of old churches and ancient trade routes. The other cuts through with bright, almost citrus-like sharpness. They shouldn't coexist easily, but they do, here, held in check by rose oil's florality while styrax and guaiac wood add their own resinous warmth. The tension never resolves into something predictable. It moves between sharp and soft, bright and smoky, pulling in different directions before settling into its base.
The evolution
The opening hits first, smoke and pepper, bright and resinous, demanding attention. Black pepper carries through the early stages while frankincense and rosewood begin their gradual transition, each note slowly giving way to the next layer beneath. The heart emerges slowly: rose oil blooms against a backdrop of smoky styrax and guaiac wood, warm and almost sticky in its resinous quality. This is the phase that defines Victresse, neither fully floral nor fully smoky, but caught in between. The interplay between the sweet, almost honeyed rose and the dark, tarry smoke of styrax creates something unexpectedly balanced, neither element overpowering the other. As the richer heart notes begin to settle, sandalwood and cashmere wood arrive, softening everything into a warm, powdery drydown that lingers close to skin.
Cultural impact
Victresse appeals to those drawn to complex, multi-layered compositions rather than straightforward floral bouquets. It's the fragrance for someone who wants presence without volume, warmth without sweetness. The balance of smoke, spice, and powdery warmth creates something that sits apart from more conventional celebrity releases, offering instead a niche-quality experience wrapped in an accessible format. Collectors of both celebrity and niche houses have found in Victresse a scent that rewards close attention, revealing different facets as it develops on skin throughout the day.
