The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
David Jourquin has built his Paris house around a focus on leather. Each fragrance in the Cuir series explores a different facet of the material, examining how leather behaves when placed alongside different accords. Cuir Solaire was conceived as a summer chapter, an exploration of leather in warmer, brighter territory. The inspiration is Andalusia, drawing from the cheerful, pleasant and warm atmosphere of the region. The result takes leather somewhere it hadn't been, pairing it with sea air and orange blossom. The composition warms and unfolds on the skin, creating a fragrance that maintains leather's essential character while embracing a lighter, more luminous approach.
What makes this composition stand apart is the marine introduction. Sea notes open the fragrance, paired with citrus and leather in a combination that feels both fresh and grounded. The salt functions as a kind of brightness, lifting the citrus and keeping the orange blossom from becoming too sweet. The cloves in the heart are dosed carefully: enough to add warmth, not enough to make this a spice bomb. The result is a fragrance that uses leather as a foundation rather than a statement.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately with salt and citrus, bright and confident. Bergamot and petitgrain share space with what the brand calls sea notes, creating a scent that reads as coastal air rather than ocean water. This phase announces itself boldly before the florals begin to assert themselves. Orange blossom rises, jasmine follows, and the cloves become more noticeable, warming the composition. The transition is not dramatic, it is a slow hand-off, the citrus stepping back as the white florals move forward. Then the leather arrives, not aggressively, it seeps in beneath the florals, anchoring them. The drydown is intimate: leather, vanilla, heliotrope, and amber layered close to the skin. Patchouli adds a faint earthiness that keeps the vanilla from becoming dessert-sweet.
Cultural impact
Cuir Solaire occupies an unusual position within the Cuir series. It presents a brighter interpretation of leather, one that incorporates marine and citrus notes to create a different kind of experience. The marine-citrus introduction distinguishes it within the collection, while the leather foundation maintains continuity with the house's core identity. The fragrance sits alongside other entries in the series that explore leather through different accords, each offering a distinct perspective on the material.
