The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alter Oud began with a contrast in materials. Launched in 2022 under d.grayi, the composition reads warm and resinous from the first spray, built around Vietnamese oud and a spice that builds slowly rather than announces. The opening has a quiet density to it, less about brightness and more about weight gathering on the skin. There's a current running through the whole wear, something between smoke and sweetness, with the oud anchoring the base while the spices and florals trade places above it. As the hours pass, the composition keeps revealing new facets. A thread of rice moves in and out, the saffron mellows from sharp to almost honeyed, and the oud gains this grounded, almost mineral quality.
What makes Alter Oud unusual is the Vietnamese oud at the base, with jasmine rice in the heart and turmeric in the drydown. The mangosteen top is the move that signals d.grayi's sensibility: a tropical fruit that reads dark and wine-like, opening with a fruit-and-spice crack that catches you off guard. That initial brightness gives way to frankincense smoke and the starchy softness of jasmine rice, pulling the scent into a quieter, resinous warmth. The combination of rice, saffron, and oud creates an accord that feels cooked rather than composed, like something simmered slowly.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are a collision. Mangosteen and saffron burst open with a fruit-and-spice crack that reads louder than expected, almost fizzy at the edges. That brightness softens by the thirty-minute mark as frankincense smoke and jasmine rice take over, pulling the scent into a quieter, resinous warmth. The rice note is particularly interesting; it adds a starchy, almost nutty softness that makes the oud feel less like a standalone statement and more like part of a conversation. By hour three, the Vietnamese oud and amber have settled into something close and grounding, and turmeric adds a dry, earthy bite that keeps it from going too sweet. The oud gains this grounded, almost mineral quality as it ages on skin, and the amber underneath keeps everything warm without turning heavy.
Cultural impact
Alter Oud was a finalist in the Artisan category at the 2023 Art and Olfaction Awards. The fragrance's profile, warm and resinous, with its use of Vietnamese oud, jasmine rice, and tropical fruit notes, makes it accessible enough for everyday wear while retaining enough depth to feel like a considered choice. It sits comfortably next to indie peers like Maison Crivelli's Oud Maracujá and Zoologist's Moth, each of which takes the oud genre in a different direction.
