The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jasmine rice is a staple in every Vietnamese household. James Nguyen, the nose behind d.grayi, wanted to create something that honored that specific memory: the steam rising from a pot of just-cooked rice, the quiet ritual of black tea brewing nearby. Red Jasmine Rice arrived in 2025 as a lunar new year reimagining of the original Jasmine Rice scent. The name says it all. The fragrance opens with the unmistakable aroma of fresh jasmine rice, still warm from the pot, paired with the astringent clarity of black tea. As the scent develops, nuances of saffron emerge, adding a subtle warmth that complements the grain's natural sweetness.
What makes this composition interesting is the rice itself. Not rice as a supporting player or a passing gourmand note, but rice as the structural spine of the entire fragrance. The perfumer uses three forms of the grain: fresh rice at the opening, rice powder in the heart, and sticky rice in the base. Vietnamese oud and saffron provide warmth and depth that support the rice throughout its development. The rice powder adds a powdery, almost talc-like quality that transforms the grain into something that reads as almost dessert-like.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with black tea and saffron. The tea brings clarity that grounds the composition from the first spray. The saffron adds warmth, creating a contrast with the fresh rice note. Then the jasmine sambac blooms in the heart, adding a floral dimension that softens the initial sharpness. The rice powder emerges as the dominant character here, adding a powdery creaminess that shifts the fragrance into gourmand territory. The drydown is where Vietnamese oud and sticky rice take over. The oud provides an earthy, resinous depth. The sticky rice lingers as a warm, comforting base note that stays close to the skin. The fragrance moves through distinct phases, each one revealing a different facet of the rice note.
Cultural impact
Red Jasmine Rice sparks conversation. One reviewer called it a 'fluffy rice dream' that became powdery and dreamy, praising its cozy potential. The fragrance is rice-forward in a way that few mainstream scents dare to be. It draws its identity from the sensory memory of Vietnamese households, where jasmine rice is not just a side dish but a daily presence, a comfort, a language of care. For those who connect with that memory, the scent becomes something more than fragrance, it becomes a way of carrying home in a bottle. For others, the rice-forward approach may not resonate, and that is part of what makes the fragrance worth discussing.
