The beginning
Opia began with a look. The brand's own copy names the feeling precisely: pupils black, glittering, bottomless, the moment eye contact becomes something more than observation. Tiffany Witehira, founder of New Zealand house Curionoir and the perfumer behind this 2016 release, translated that vulnerable, invasive warmth into a fruity-woody composition. Rhubarb does the work of that first glance, sharp and present, while oud and sandalwood hold the gaze steady. The fragrance treats the unspoken tension between two people as raw material, then lets the wearer carry it.
What makes the structure interesting is the tension between the rhubarb's brightness and the depth of the materials underneath. Rhubarb is a rare top-note choice for an oud composition. Most oud fragrances lean immediately into smoke, leather, or resin, building weight from the first spray. Here, the rhubarb forces a moment of acidity, almost confectionery, before the agarwood and sandalwood assert themselves. It's a deliberate delay, the olfactory equivalent of holding eye contact a beat longer than comfortable.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to rhubarb alone. Tart, almost jammy, the green sourness of fruit picked before its time, that puckering sharpness you associate with stalk rather than pie filling. Then the woods arrive, not all at once but in layers. The oud opens smoky and medicinal before settling into something drier, more leather-bound, the kind of cured hide smell that lives somewhere between a saddle shop and a pharmacy shelf. Sandalwood enters next, softening the oud's edges with its creamy, slightly nutty warmth, a counterweight that keeps the woods from collapsing into austerity. Labdanum grounds the whole composition in amber, adding that sticky, resinous sweetness that makes the woods feel lived-in rather than severe. As the hours pass, the rhubarb dissolves into memory, its sharp edges rounded off and absorbed into the resinous base.
