Heritage
A house, in its own words
Curionoir emerged from Tiffany Witehira's desire to use fragrance as a narrative medium. Born into a family of strong creative women, Witehira grew up immersed in stories and traditions that would later inform her work. Her path led her to Grasse, the historic heart of French perfumery, where she deepened her understanding of the craft while maintaining her distinctly New Zealand viewpoint. The house debuted its first fragrances around 2016, beginning with releases like Opia, Tobacco Night, and Dark Bouquet. Over the following years, Witehira expanded the collection while remaining deeply involved in every aspect of creation. The brand name itself hints at curiosity and noir, suggesting an exploration of darker, more mysterious territory within scent. Unlike houses backed by large corporations, Curionoir operates as an independent vision, allowing Witehira complete creative freedom. This independence shows in the unusual references scattered throughout the lineup, from Egyptian queens to historical periods, all refracted through a New Zealand lens. The house now offers extraits, pocket parfum sizes, and home fragrances, though each release remains deliberate rather than prolific.
Witehira describes Curionoir as built on "a fascination for the interesting and uncommon." This principle guides every decision, from note combinations to the historical moments she chooses to honor. Rather than chasing trends, she reaches backward into perfumery's archive and into her own heritage, finding connections between ancient resins, Māori plant knowledge, and contemporary sensation. The brand resists easy categorization. Scents like 415 AD reference the era of Hypatia of Alexandria, rebuilding fragrance from historical plant and resin records. Others draw from Egyptian iconography or Greek mythology. This approach treats perfume as more than pleasant气味—it becomes a vehicle for memory and research. Witehira has spoken about weaving worlds, connecting generations of creative women in her family with the global history of scent. The result feels both intimate and expansive, personal yet widely resonant. Each fragrance holds a specific moment in time while remaining firmly present.
