Heritage
A house, in its own words
The origins of Maori Collection trace back to 2017, when a small team of fragrance enthusiasts in New Zealand decided to create a line that would honor Māori culture through scent. The founders, whose names are not widely publicized, partnered with a Parisian laboratory to formulate the first edition, drawing on both local botanical research and classic French perfume craftsmanship. Early releases, such as Air (2020) and Amulet (2021), demonstrated a commitment to sourcing ingredients that reflect the geography of Aotearoa, including manuka honey, rimu resin and coastal kelp extracts. In 2022 the house introduced Phoenix, a fragrance that references the mythic rebirth of the native kiwi bird, and in 2024 a cluster of releases – Wise Way, Charisma, Mystery of Life, Antares – expanded the narrative scope to include stories of navigation, celestial observation and personal insight. The most recent addition, Second Sight (2025), marks the brand's fifth year of continuous development and showcases a more experimental approach, blending traditional absolutes with synthetic accords to evoke the feeling of looking beyond the visible horizon. Throughout its growth, Maori Collection has maintained a modest production scale, allowing close collaboration with ingredient growers in the North Island and careful quality control in the French lab. The brand’s timeline reflects a steady cadence of releases rather than rapid expansion, reinforcing its focus on depth over breadth. While the house has not yet received major industry awards, it has been featured in niche perfume blogs and has cultivated a following among collectors who value cultural authenticity and artisanal detail. Maori Collection frames its creative vision around the concept of narrative scent. The team believes that fragrance can act as a storyteller, translating oral traditions and landscape memory into olfactory form. This philosophy drives the selection of raw materials: each ingredient is chosen for its connection to a specific place or legend. The brand also embraces a kaupapa Māori perspective, which emphasizes respect for the land (whenua) and the people (tangata). This outlook informs decisions about sustainability, encouraging the use of renewable harvest methods and supporting local growers. Rather than chasing trends, the house aims to create scents that feel timeless, allowing the wearer to experience a moment that is both personal and communal. Transparency is another pillar; the brand publishes ingredient lists and provides context for each note, inviting consumers to learn about the cultural references embedded in the perfume. By positioning scent as a conduit for cultural exchange, Maori Collection hopes to foster dialogue between Māori heritage and the broader global community.
