The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Pop Collection arrived as an expansion of the CoSTUME NATIONAL fragrance line, arriving alongside a fashion collection of the same name. The bottle design makes this literal: packaged in stark white, it reveals one of four vivid colors, turquoise, orange, red, or royal blue, only when opened. Dominique Ropion was tasked with building a scent that could sit alongside that chromatic surprise without contradicting it. The composition needed to carry the energy suggested by the name while remaining grounded in the house's signature restraint. What emerged was a fragrance that balances brightness with depth, playful color with architectural discipline.
The top notes, raspberry, blackcurrant, grapefruit, are energetic and joyful, but they're paired with jasmine and rose rather than a typical sweet floral heart. That floral heart keeps the composition from reading as purely confectionery. The florals arrive with a modern cleanliness that elevates the fruit rather than overwhelming it. Then the base layers cashmeran, amber, and patchouli underneath to give it weight and warmth that extends the wear.
The evolution
The opening hits quickly, a burst of raspberry and blackcurrant with a sharp citrus edge from the grapefruit. The sweetness is immediate but clean, like biting into a ripe berry. Within the first 15 minutes, the rose and jasmine begin to emerge, softening the composition and adding a quiet floral grace that tempers the initial brightness. The rose arrives not as a powdery bloom but as something cleaner, more contemporary. Jasmine layers underneath with a creamy floral presence that softens the composition without slowing it down. By the second hour, the base notes arrive, cashmeran adds a soft, almost skin-warm quality while the patchouli grounds everything with a dry, earthy finish. The amber appears as a warmth that lingers close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Pop Collection arrived as part of CoSTUME NATIONAL's fragrance line, using bright berry notes and a pop-chic positioning within the brand's aesthetic. The scent offers presence without excessive projection, striking a balance between designer accessibility and minimalist restraint. Its restrained character makes it versatile for professional environments where subtlety matters. The fragrance occupies a thoughtful space, neither shouting for attention nor disappearing entirely, appealing to those who appreciate quiet confidence over loud statement pieces.
