The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Universal Vanilla is the 2026 release from CoSTUME NATIONAL, composed by Sophie Labbé. The fragrance arrives as an unexpected move from a label whose catalogue has leaned toward restraint. Putting vanilla at the center of a composition requires a particular kind of confidence, and the choice of Bourbon vanilla absolute as the structural anchor sets the tone for everything that follows. CoSTUME NATIONAL traces its identity to Ennio Capasa, credited as the bottle designer for Universal Vanilla, and the bottle itself carries the clean lines and reductive geometry that have come to define the brand's visual language. The juice inside, though, is warmer and more textured than the minimal exterior might suggest, a deliberate tension between the container and what's poured into it.
Labbé's choice to anchor the formula in Bourbon vanilla absolute rather than a vanillin-heavy reconstruction is the structural decision that defines this composition. The absolute carries the bitter, smoky edge of the cured pod itself, and Labbé builds around that tension with a careful arrangement of supporting notes. Lavender in the opening pulls the sweetness toward something herbal and cool, almost camphorated at the edges, the way fresh lavender buds smell before they dry.
The evolution
The opening arrives with lavender and rum almost simultaneously, the lavender cutting the rum's warmth with something clean and slightly medicinal, like dried herbs tossed into a glass of spiced liquor. Mate settles underneath, giving the first minutes a tannic quality that reads more like a cold brew than a cocktail, a dryness that preps the palate for what's coming. Within twenty minutes, the rum rounds off and cacao moves forward. This is the dry, bitter side of chocolate, not milk-sweet, more reminiscent of high-percentage cacao paste than a dessert. Jasmine sambac flickers here and there, adding a waxy white-flower texture that keeps the composition from going purely gourmand, a subtle counterpoint that prevents the vanilla from swallowing everything around it. Around the hour mark, the base takes over in earnest.
Cultural impact
Universal Vanilla reads as a deliberate counterpoint to the sweeter, more confectionary vanilla fragrances that have proliferated in recent years. The combination of Bourbon vanilla absolute with lavender, cacao, and mate gives the composition a dry, resinous character that separates it from anything dessert-coded. Labbé's arrangement of these materials produces a scent that feels built rather than blended, with each note earning its place through contrast rather than accumulation.
