The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cyber Garden arrived in 2013, a period when the digital revolution had fully permeated daily life yet nature remained an aspirational ideal in urban consciousness. CoSTUME NATIONAL, the Milanese fashion house built on sharp tailoring and a rock-and-roll sensibility, asked perfumer Antoine Lie to reconcile these opposing forces. Lie understood the brand's aesthetic: architectural precision, urban grit, and a minimalist approach that never sacrificed substance for style. Rather than creating a literal garden scent, he built a landscape that exists somewhere between greenhouse and server room, where organic and synthetic coexist without apology. The collaboration produced a fragrance that felt native to the brand's identity, translating CoSTUME NATIONAL's clothing philosophy into olfactory terms: structured, confident, slightly rebellious against convention.
The note structure reflects a deliberate philosophy: citrus and spice open the composition to grab attention, but the true character lives in the heart where green and synthetic elements collide. The violet leaf and vinyl pairing is not accidental. Violet leaf provides the organic, living element while vinyl represents the digital, processed reality. Their combination creates a tension that defines the fragrance's identity. The base anchors this conceptual framework with vetiver, moss, and patchouli, ensuring the scent has substance and staying power. The addition of myrrh and labdanum introduces warmth and resinous depth that prevents the composition from feeling purely cold or clinical.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with an opening burst that feels like stepping into a sunlit courtyard. Grapefruit delivers its tart, almost acidic brightness while bergamot softens the edges with its elegant citrus-floral character. Pink pepper arrives as a surprise guest, adding a subtle spice that prickles the senses without disrupting the citrus clarity. As the composition matures, the heart unfolds with striking clarity. Violet leaf dominates with its fresh, green, slightly metallic character, evoking crushed stems and dewy mornings. Vinyl emerges as the defining innovation, lending a synthetic yet not unpleasant nuance that suggests circuit boards and polished metal surfaces. Geranium rounds the heart with its rosy, slightly bitter herbaceousness while saffron provides a warm, exotic undertone that deepens the complexity. The drydown pulls everything back toward earth: vetiver and moss create a damp, underground quality that feels primordial yet intentional.
Cultural impact
Since its 2013 debut, Cyber Garden has become a cult favourite among fans of green‑synthetic scents. Wearers often cite its vinyl note as a defining modern twist, comparing it to the futuristic vibe of Parco 1923 (2020) and the crisp metal edge of Dune pour Homme (2015). Its balanced sillage makes it a go‑to for city dwellers who want a fragrance that feels both fresh and technologically sleek, earning steady mentions in niche forums and seasonal round‑ups.
