The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Moody arrived in 2015 as part of Clash Fragrances' Riot series. Quentin Bisch composed the scent. The name does the work upfront. The composition earns it. Bergamot and apple arrive composed, then sage and artemisia stir the pot, and patchouli grounds the whole thing in warmth that refuses to sit still. The opening plays bright and confident, bergamot cutting cleanly with that slightly bitter edge citrus carries when it isn't sweetened for mass appeal. Apple rounds the top with a crisp, almost green sweetness that tempers the sharpness without dulling it. Then the herbal middle takes over quickly, sage arriving with its dry, slightly camphorated coolness while artemisia threads through with a faint bitterness that complicates the clean fruit.
What's interesting here is the swing between crisp fruit at the top and earthy resin at the base. Bergamot and apple promise clean, and artemisia and sage complicate it quickly. Rose threads through the middle, softening the herbal sharpness without tipping into sweetness. Then benzoin and patchouli close it with that resinous, slightly dirty warmth. The accord balance matters: the rose functions as a quiet pivot point, present enough to register but never loud enough to dominate the herbal frame around it.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are the easiest to underestimate. Bergamot cuts clean, apple adds a green sweetness that reads almost cold. It feels like a daytime aromatic, straightforward, almost polite. Then artemisia arrives and the temperature drops. Sage follows, herbal and slightly camphorated, and the rose appears underneath it, quiet but unmistakable. The middle stretch is where Moody earns attention. What reads as a simple aromatic on first spray warms considerably as the hours pass, the benzoin already pulling the heart down toward the base even before the patchouli fully arrives. The herbal notes don't disappear so much as they recede, making room for the resinous warmth underneath to take center. By the later stages of wear, the composition has consolidated into something denser and more grounded.
Cultural impact
Moody fits naturally into Clash's Riot series, a line that leans into attitude and character over safe versatility. The composition leans aromatic with a herbal-floral core, and the resinous base sets it apart from anything that aims for crowd-pleasing freshness. The scent carries an unpredictability in how the notes interact, bergamot and apple promising a clean opening before sage and artemisia shift the temperature, and patchouli ultimately grounding the whole thing in earthy warmth. It reads as a fragrance with a temper rather than a composition designed to flatter everyone in a room.
