The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Seven Deadly Sins launched in 2024 as part of Chaos's debut Scents of Darkness collection. The fragrance takes its name from the oldest story in the book: the pull toward something forbidden. Perfumer Benjamin Belizon translated that pull into a composition of cardamom, oud, leather, and coffee, materials that carry weight, heat, and the faint suggestion of risk. The opening burns bright and quick, the cardamom snapping like a struck match before the spices settle into something slower and more deliberate. Oud enters with a resinous depth, not the sharp medicinal variety but something rounder, almost chewy, and it lays a foundation that the rest of the composition keeps returning to.
What makes the composition interesting is how it stacks contradictions. Peach and ginger sit at the top, sweet and sharp at the same time. Lavender, a note most people associate with clean linen and soap, gets pulled into a much darker conversation with oud and rhubarb. The base leans fully into leather, coffee, sandalwood, and patchouli, a combination that reads less like a fragrance pyramid and more like a slow pull toward something you know you shouldn't touch. The unusual part is the rhubarb heart, which adds a tart, almost vegetal tension between the lavender's softness and the oud's smokiness. Belizon isn't hiding the darkness. He's centering it.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are loud. Cardamom, ginger, and pink pepper hit warm and immediate, with peach trying to sweeten the blow but not quite succeeding. By the thirty-minute mark the spices start to hand off to something denser. Oud and lavender arrive together, and the lavender does something unexpected here: instead of staying herbal and clean, it darkens, almost brooding, as the oud's resinous smoke takes the lead. Rhubarb flickers at the seams, keeping things sharp when the composition might otherwise smooth out. Around the two-hour mark the base settles in for the long haul. Leather and coffee become the dominant voice, warm and slightly bitter, with patchouli grounding the whole thing in something earthy and real. Sandalwood softens the edges without adding sweetness.
Cultural impact
Seven Deadly Sins sits at the center of Chaos's debut Scents of Darkness collection. The fragrance reads as a statement piece for the house, the title alone positioning it within a brand narrative rooted in darkness and temptation. The composition moves through its notes with conviction: cardamom, oud, lavender, rhubarb, leather, coffee, patchouli, and sandalwood, each one chosen for the way it interacts with the others rather than for any standalone appeal.
