The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Catherine Malandrino launched L'Energie de New York in 2017, and the name does exactly what it says on the bottle. Less a perfume and more a mood board of a city, the fragrance points straight at the kinetic charge of Manhattan mornings, the second-coffee energy, the way a city that never stops asks you to keep up. It's a scent that captures movement and momentum, the smell of cold glass towers catching early light, of steam rising from sidewalk vents, of wet pavement reflecting traffic signals. The fragrance opens with an immediate rush of ozone and aquatic brightness, almost like stepping off a subway into January air, crisp, mineral, and charged. There's no languid introduction here, no soft fade-in.
The composition is built on a thoughtful structure: ozone and aquatic notes up top, a green floral heart, then a soft woody-musky floor. What makes it interesting isn't any single rare material. It's the calibration. The ozonic notes are restrained enough to suggest open air and concrete glare. The jasmine sambac absolute (not a mere accord) brings real depth to the heart, paired with rose oil and geranium for that green-tinged floral character.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast and immediate. Ozonic and aquatic notes crack open with citruses and green stems, and for the first ten to fifteen minutes the fragrance reads almost like cold air moving through tall buildings. There's no slow build. It shows up fully dressed. The citrus adds a metallic glint to the ozone, like sun off steel, while the green stems bring a crushed-leaf sharpness that grounds the brightness. By the twenty-minute mark the florals start pulling focus, cyclamen and geranium giving way to jasmine sambac and rose oil in a heart that feels more botanical than powdery. The cyclamen lends a watery, translucent quality to the transition, almost like the color draining from the sky at dusk. This middle phase runs for a few solid hours, and it's where the fragrance does its best work, floral but never old-fashioned, green without smelling like a lawn.
Cultural impact
L'Energie de New York wears like a Manhattan power scent designed for someone who doesn't want to smell like they're trying. Its aquatic-ozonic opening places it firmly in the conversation of modern urban fragrances, but the geranium-and-jasmine heart gives it genuine depth. The combination reads as polished and intentional, the kind of scent that suits daytime hours and moments when you want to feel composed. The fragrance projects a moderate radius, present enough to be noticed but never overwhelming, which makes it versatile across settings.
