The beginning
Eternity for Men Summer 2017 arrived as part of Calvin Klein's ongoing seasonal spin on its flagship Eternity line. The Summer editions are built to interpret the brand's core character through a warmer, brighter lens, and this one leans hard into a tropical-fresh register without abandoning the classic structure. Released in 2017, it carried the same approach other Summer editions of the line have followed. The brief reads simple: take the Eternity template and make it breathe like July. What comes out is a composition that swaps the original's denser base for something airier, with coconut water and violet leaf doing the lifting where richer notes once anchored things. It's not a reinvention.
The interesting choice here is putting desert sage alongside ginger and bergamot in the opening. Sage is a green, slightly peppery herb that most Summer fragrances avoid because it can read medicinal, but pairing it with ginger's clean heat gives it purpose. Bergamot opens the door, then the sage and ginger together create a spiced-arid effect, like walking past a desert garden in the morning. Coconut water in the heart is the unconventional pick.
The evolution
Bergamot and ginger land first, bright and almost fizzy, with the sage threading underneath as a dry, herbal hum. Then the coconut water arrives, and the composition cools noticeably. It feels like walking out of direct sun into shade, the sharpness replaced by something softer and slightly sweet. Violet leaf and jasmine sambac sit beneath that coconut, keeping the green thread alive without making it bitter. The heart holds at moderate projection, close enough that someone leaning in catches it but it doesn't announce you across a room. As the composition dries down, the musk and sandalwood start pulling the composition down and inward. The coconut fades first, then the ginger, leaving a skin musk blend with woody warmth that clings close. What lingers past that is mostly the musk, clean and slightly warm, almost like a quieter version of the opening recalibrated for evening.

Eternity Summer 2017 sits in a specific lane: it's a warm-weather interpretation of an established designer fragrance line, built for department store rotation during the months when heavier compositions feel wrong for the season. This particular release leans into a coconut water accord that was a notable thread in men's fragrance during the mid-2010s, positioning itself in a space where fresh and tropical overlap without fully committing to either category.
