The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Goldea The Roman Night arrived in 2017 as Bvlgari's interpretation of the Eternal City after dark, sensuality, unpredictability, and casual spontaneity. A year later, the Absolute arrived. Same city, same story, but someone turned up the dial. Where the original offered a glimpse, the Absolute insisted. It was the difference between walking past a palazzo at night and being invited inside.
Alberto Morillas built this around jasmine sambac absolute, not the lighter, fresher jasmine you find in many florals, but the rich, almost indolic kind that behaves like a resin when it hits warm skin. Paired with bourbon vanilla, it creates a sweet floral heart that reads as both sophisticated and a little dangerous. Black plum in the top keeps things fruity and accessible, while black musk and crystallised moss in the base give it the earthiness that stops it from becoming a pure sugarbomb. The contrast between fruit-forward opening and animalic drydown is where this fragrance lives.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, black plum with a liquorous, almost jammy quality that feels dark and inviting. Orange blossom follows within minutes, brightening the sweetness just enough to keep it from becoming cloying. As the floral element settles in, jasmine sambac absolute takes over, the handoff seamless and natural. The vanilla arrives alongside it, warm and resinous, wrapping around the florals and deepening the overall impression. The composition enters its heart phase, sweet, floral, intimate, a stage where the plum's darkness softens into something more approachable. The drydown shifts the energy. Patchouli emerges first, earthy, slightly bitter, grounding the sweetness that came before. Then black musk arrives, adding an animalic depth that feels like the scent has been on skin long enough to become part of it.
Cultural impact
Part of the Goldea line that began in 2017, the Absolute interpretation pushed the Roman Night concept toward something darker and more insistent. The increased concentration amplifies the plum-vanilla density, creating a richer, more persistent experience. The plum-vanilla density isn't for everyone, but for those who want a fragrance that commits, it delivers.
