Why it exists.
The beginning
Brioni built its name on the premise that a man's clothing should do the announcing for him. Iris Exquis is the result of a collaboration between perfumers Karine Vinchon-Spehner, Michel Almairac, and Pierre Robertet, and the material at its center is not a supporting player. Iris is the composition. Everything else exists to serve it. The powdery-violet elegance of the iris takes absolute center stage, its delicate floralcy commanding every attention. Supporting notes of green violet leaf and black tea are calibrated to enhance rather than compete, creating a scent that speaks with the same restraint and precision as Brioni's tailored clothing.
The iris in Iris Exquis does not behave like iris usually behaves in masculine scent. Rather than sitting prettily as a powdery bridge between opening and drydown, it arrives with intention, taking up space in the heart with a vegetal-earthy character pulled from carrot seed and sharpened by black tea's smoky clarity. The suede base does not compete with it. The suede holds it.
The evolution
The opening hits cool and ozonic. Violet leaf and verbena arrive together, with a faint warmth from black pepper underneath. It reads green, almost watery, before the iris pushes through and changes the temperature. For the next several hours, iris and black tea dominate. The powdery quality is there, but so is an earthy depth that keeps it from reading as merely refined. As the drydown approaches, suede surfaces gradually, softening the composition's edges. Patchouli anchors the end. The violet and verbena fade in the opening phase. The iris-tea heart carries through the mid-wear. Suede arrives as the fragrance deepens and continues into the close, wrapping the earlier notes in a softened embrace.

Iris Exquis enters a fragrance landscape where iris is everywhere and good iris is rare. The ozonic-aquatic character here, combined with the earthy carrot seed and smoky black tea, creates something that stands apart from conventional masculine iris interpretations.
