The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Borntostandout's Black Guava takes its name from a deliberate contradiction. Guava is tropical, bright, juicy, something you'd find in a fruit bowl, not a perfume bottle. But add 'Black' and the equation changes. The collection launched in 2025 as the brand's Extrait Extrême line. The fragrance layers ripe, tropical guava notes with smoky, dark woody elements to create something unexpected. The combination of bright fruit and deep smoke gives Black Guava its distinctive character, a scent that feels both familiar and surprising.
Madagascan oud brings depth to the composition, its rich, smoky character anchoring the brighter elements. Cardamom appears in the blend, its spice bridging the fruity top notes and the darker heart. The result is a fragrance where tropical sweetness doesn't simply dominate but shares space with something deeper. Guava remains present throughout, but it evolves in context with the surrounding notes rather than standing alone.
The evolution
The opening reads like fruit meeting spice, guava and cardamom arriving together, mandarin lifting everything into brightness. At first, this is tropical, sweet, immediate. Then the oud arrives. It doesn't crash in, it seeps, layering smoke beneath the sweetness. Rose and geranium take on a different quality against the wood, greener, more complex. Patchouli and cypriol ground the base, grey amber and ambrostar adding warmth with an animalic edge. The sweet fruit eventually fades but resinous, smoky notes linger, present on skin long after the initial application. What begins bright gradually shifts darker, the composition evolving as the hours pass.
Cultural impact
Black Guava combines tropical fruit sweetness with a dark woody backbone. The pairing of guava and oud creates something that steps outside the expected boundaries of fruity fragrances. The composition appeals to those who appreciate fruit notes that carry unexpected depth, balancing brightness with something more somber. Enthusiasts have noted its sillage, the way the scent projects and announces itself in a space.
