This Grand Affair arrived in 2015 as part of Blocki's revival, when descendants of the original family resurrected a storied American perfume house after decades of silence. Kevin Verspoor composed it as the Emma collection's most vintage expression, and the composition carries a distinctly old-fashioned sensibility that sets it apart from the brand's other offerings. The fragrance reads like a letter from an earlier era of perfumery, one when American fragrance houses still had their own distinct accent and sensibility. Verspoor's approach leans into classical structure rather than modern minimalism, giving the juice a layered, generous feel that rewards close attention.
The davana oil up top is what makes this one different from the usual powdery vanilla exercise. Davana smells like dried herbs left in a warm kitchen, with a fermented sweetness that reads almost boozy, almost like a dusty liqueur forgotten in a cabinet.
