    Master Perfumer

    Kevin Verspoor

Kevin Verspoor operates as a self-trained American perfumer whose expertise runs deeper than most. He has spent years assembling a collection of more than 3,000 vintage perfume bottles, each one serving as a study in formulation technique and cultural history. His professional training took place across four major fragrance houses: IFF, Symrise, FragranceResources, and drom fragrances, where he built a versatile foundation in both fine and functional fragrance creation. In 2005, he began working out of a fragrance studio in TriBeCa, a space shared with other independent perfumers. His breakthrough came with ODIN 6 Amanu, an indie fragrance that earned a FiFi award and brought his name to a wider audience. He later launched his own label, PERFUMEKEV, which specializes in reconstructed classics inspired by historical formulas. The industry has recognized him multiple times, including FiFi wins in the Consultation and Bespoke Fragrance Suite categories. Beyond creation, he contributes to the fragrance community through writing for CaFleureBon and co-hosting conversations on the American Perfumer podcast, where he discusses classic perfumes and the craft of formulation with characteristic directness and enthusiasm.

    The signature

    How Kevin composes

Verspoor draws heavily on classical perfumery materials, particularly the heavier naturals and fixed oils that characterized mid-twentieth century formulations. His signature technique involves layering vintage-inspired accords with contemporary restraint, allowing traditional elements to anchor modern compositions. He favors rose, aldehydic florals, and resinous bases that recall the grand feminine fragrances of the mid-century era. His PERFUMEKEV line demonstrates this approach through reconstructions like Rose 1902 and A Bunch of Flowers 1912, which reimagine historical styles for present-day wearers. On the technical side, he brings experience from functional fragrance work, giving his fine fragrances a structural clarity that prevents them from becoming purely nostalgic exercises. His style sits at the intersection of reverence and reinvention, honoring tradition while maintaining his own distinct voice.

    Philosophy

    What drives Kevin

Verspoor treats each fragrance as a conversation with the past. His driving interest lies in understanding why certain vintage formulations resonate across decades, and how those principles can inform new work. Rather than chasing trends, he looks to historical examples for structure and proportion, believing that the best modern fragrances often owe debts to compositions that came before. His bespoke work reflects a commitment to listening closely to clients and translating their desires into scent without unnecessary ornamentation. He approaches reconstruction not as imitation but as informed interpretation, using his knowledge of classic materials to build something that feels both familiar and fresh. For Verspoor, the collector and the creator operate in service of the same goal: preserving and advancing the art of perfumery.
