The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name Amanu draws from mythology, Odin, the Norse deity of wisdom and war. That naming convention signals exactly what this fragrance is: a passage, not a destination. The concept anchored Odin's vision for their fifth signature scent, launched in 2011 as a Barney's New York exclusive. Combining the ambiance of Mediterranean landscape with the ancient character of Anatolian region, perfumer Kevin Verspoor translated that geographic tension into a composition that moves between brightness and depth, freshness and earthiness, restraint and richness. The result isn't a landscape photograph, it's the feeling of crossing a border and finding something you didn't expect on the other side.
What makes the composition work is the way it refuses to commit to one register. Galbanum gives the opening its sharp, herbal character, the kind of green that cuts through stale air and demands attention. But mastic, the resin in the top, softens that sharpness with a warm, Mediterranean quality that prevents the whole thing from tipping into astringent territory. Blood orange adds a fruit sweetness that feels sunny rather than synthetic.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately. Galbanum cuts through, sharp and herbal, with blood orange's tart brightness and mastic's warm resinous quality filling in the space around it. The overall effect is crisp, morning air on a Mediterranean hillside. The heart arrives as the initial sharpness softens. Jasmine sambac brings a creamy sweetness that smooths the edges, while magnolia adds a floral lift that keeps things luminous. Cedar leaf introduces a dry woodiness that keeps things grounded. The green doesn't disappear, it deepens. By the drydown, the bright citrus and galbanum have receded, leaving amberwood's warm wood, moss's earthy dampness, and a musk that stays close to the skin. The sillage remains moderate throughout, present in close conversation rather than announced from across the room.
Cultural impact
06 Amanu won the 2012 FIFI Indie Fragrance of the Year award, placing it among the most celebrated independent releases of its era. Over a decade since its launch, it remains in continuous production, a rare feat for a niche fragrance. The scent appeals to wearers looking for something outside the mainstream: green and woody but refined, fashion-forward but grounded, with enough character to stand apart from both designer florals and conventional masculine fougères. It occupies a specific space, sophisticated without being precious, distinctive without being difficult.
