The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Calice Becker created Blackberry Amber in 2007, designing a composition that opens juicy and bright, then settles into amber warmth rather than disappearing. The name captures it: blackberry's tart sweetness, anchored by amber's depth. The top notes arrive with an immediate burst of ripe blackberry, their dark, jammy character brightened by a subtle berry acidity. As the fragrance develops, the fruitiness softens, giving way to the resinous, honeyed quality of amber that wraps around the remaining fruit notes. The base lingers with a smooth, warm trail that remains present on the skin for hours, avoiding the sharp fade common in many fruity fragrances.
The note pyramid tells the story with intention. Blackberry and raspberry arrive first, tart, bright, immediate. Then heliotrope and jasmine shift the register, adding a powdery floral softness that tempers the fruit's edge. Caramel bridges the transition, its sweetness threading toward the base. By the time amber, vanilla, and sandalwood arrive, the result feels cohesive rather than scattered. The floral heart prevents the composition from becoming overly sweet, while the caramel adds a gourmand warmth that connects the bright opening to the resinous base.
The evolution
Blackberry Amber doesn't dawdle. The top notes arrive within seconds, blackberry and raspberry carrying that tart brightness of berries warmed by late-summer sun. Heliotrope and jasmine temper the fruit's edge within the first thirty minutes, adding powdery softness. Caramel threads in around the hour mark, its sweetness bridging toward the base. By hour two, amber anchors the composition while vanilla adds creaminess and sandalwood provides soft wood. The fragrance has shifted from fruit salad to warm embrace. Patchouli appears very late as a whisper, grounding without dominating. Hours three through five offer a skin-close musk and vanilla combination, the ghost of the opening fruit, transformed.
Cultural impact
Blackberry Amber arrived in 2007, introducing a different side of Bath & Body Works' fragrance offerings. The scent combines dark berry notes with warm amber, creating a composition that feels both contemporary and timeless. Its balance of fruity sweetness and resinous warmth set it apart from lighter, more transient fragrances. The blend has resonated with those who appreciate depth in their scents, offering a way to wear something distinctive without it becoming overwhelming.
