The beginning
14 Juillet, the date that marks the storming of the Bastille, the moment France turned a page. For Bastille Day, the entire country pours into streets, parks, and balconies to watch the sky crack open in light. Perfumer Meabh McCurtin wanted to bottle that exact moment: the anticipation before the first spark, the collective exhale as the finale fades, the warmth that lingers when the crowd thins and the night air settles back in.
The fireworks accord is the star, a synthetic accord that captures the ionic charge of spent sparks, that metallic-bright smell of gunpowder smoke hanging in humid summer air. Most fragrances chase the aftermath of celebration. This one goes for the event itself: the burst, the crack, the ozone trail. Tangerine and blackcurrant provide the tart, electric opening before the composition settles into smoky Madagascar vanilla and tonka bean.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart, tangerine and blackcurrant crackling like the first spark in the dark.
