The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Baloak arrived in 2024 as part of Balint Parfums' annual expansion. The name hints at oak, but the actual inspiration runs deeper, a dialogue between brightness and grounding, between fruit that arrives sharp and wood that stays. Blackberries anchor the top note, threading down through the heart and into the base where Nagarmotha grounds the composition. Wine opens the fragrance with a rich, fermented quality that blends into the fruity brightness. Cedar settles into the drydown with quiet persistence. It is, in a sense, an exploration of how bright and deep elements coexist on skin, each contributing to a fragrance that reveals new facets over time.
The heart is where the real work happens. Laotian oud sits beside coconut CO2 and Iris Pallida, three materials that could easily crowd each other. The oud provides a quiet smokiness that the coconut softens, while the iris adds that powdery warmth that bridges the fruity opening and the woody close. Orris root deepens the iris effect, adding earthiness and structure. White cognac gives the heart a slight warmth without pushing into sweetness. Nagarmotha in the base is the unexpected element, earthy and grounding, it keeps the sandalwood and cedar from becoming too clean.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: blackberry and red wine collide with a tartness that makes itself known right away. Galbanum arrives within seconds, adding a green quality that prevents the fruit from feeling overly sweet. The wine note weaves through the top phase, its fermented character complementing the blackberry rather than competing with it. As this initial burst settles, the coconut begins to soften everything, bridging the sharp opening toward something more rounded. The heart is where most people fall in love with this fragrance. The iris and coconut create a creamy warmth that contrasts sharply with the tart opening. The Laotian oud emerges quietly, adding depth without demanding attention. The orris butter deepens the iris effect, creating a powdery quality that feels almost violet in its softness.
Cultural impact
Baloak represents an intriguing addition to the Balint Parfums collection, showcasing the house's approach to contrasts and complementarity in fragrance. The scent brings together blackberry and red wine in a combination that feels both familiar and unexpected. These fruity and fermented notes create a bridge between sweet and dry, inviting exploration of how they interact with the deeper elements. The drydown moves through iris warmth into a woody foundation of cedar and sandalwood, with benzoin providing resinous sweetness and Nagarmotha adding an earthy, slightly smoky quality.
