The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aus Liebe zum Duft, the German niche house founded in 2000, sought to intensify its beloved No 1 fragrance. Perfumer Marc vom Ende responded in 2015, crafting No 1 Extreme as a bolder statement while preserving the original's clean aesthetic. The result arrived in a sleek, minimal flacon, embodying the house's restrained design philosophy.
The opening notes were chosen for their immediate clarity and energy, with citrus and spice creating an invigorating first impression that softens into florals before resolving into a warm, leathery drydown. This progression mirrors the house's preference for structure: bright opening, tempered heart, enduring base. The pairing of jasmine with cedarwood reflects a desire to balance sweetness with restraint, while leather and benzoin anchor the composition in warmth.
The evolution
The scent begins with a brisk citrus burst, lemon and lime sharpened by cardamom and ginger. Black tea grounds the opening, lending an aromatic depth. As the heart develops, jasmine emerges alongside lily of the valley, their floral sweetness softened by cedarwood's dry presence. The drydown shifts toward leather and benzoin, ambergris adding a maritime warmth that bridges to the final woody base of sandalwood and vetiver.
Cultural impact
Since its 2015 debut, No 1 Extreme has been noted for its spicy‑woody character, quickly becoming a favorite among collectors who appreciate a bold, ambery composition. Reviews highlight its striking leather‑vanilla drydown and strong sillage, positioning it as a go‑to for those seeking a warm, confident scent that stands out in a crowd.
