The beginning
Cherry & Musk arrived in 2022 from Atelier Faye, and it makes a deliberate choice right from the start. Where most cherry fragrances chase the bright, candy register of maraschino or stem-fresh fruit, this one aimed for the back of the glass, the dregs that hold the real flavor. The name is the formula: cherry, for the fruit that opens sweet, and musk, for everything that follows once the sugar burns off. Atelier Faye's collaborative structure means the composition carries more than one sensibility: one perfumer's instinct for gourmand warmth, another's pull toward resinous depth, a third's eye for floral restraint. Cherry & Musk is the kind of work that the house produces when memory, not market positioning, drives the brief.
What makes the composition worth examining is the structural decision to open with Bourbon whiskey alongside the cherry rather than with a bright citrus or green leaf. The Bourbon does two things at once: it pushes the cherry into a darker, fermented register, and it primes the wearer for the resinous base that arrives later. Orchid in the heart is an unusual choice in a fruit-forward composition. Most cherry fragrances pair the fruit with rose or jasmine, but orchid brings a creamy, almost metallic coolness that keeps the sweetness from collapsing into dessert.
The evolution
On skin, the first 30 minutes belong entirely to Bourbon and cherry. The whiskey note carries an almost alcoholic warmth, like the smell of a glass that held something strong an hour ago. The cherry underneath reads ripe, almost overripe. There's no tartness holding it back. By the 45-minute mark, the orchid and plum have entered quietly, cooling the fruit down into something more like spiced jam than fresh-picked. Rose threads through this phase without ever becoming a floral fragrance. At the two-hour point, the Bourbon is mostly gone. What remains is plum-skin softness, a whisper of rose, and the slow arrival of myrrh and balsam. These resins add a low, amber hum, closer to church incense than to a perfume counter. The black musk takes over by hour three, and this is where Cherry & Musk becomes its truest self. The fruit is gone. The florals have faded.
