The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Green Rose arrived in 2024 as part of Aspinal of London's first fragrance collection, extending the house's understated British elegance beyond leather goods into sensory territory. Serge de Oliveira, whose French training shows in the classical structure of his compositions, was tasked with capturing something quintessentially English: the scent of a rose garden in the hour after dawn. The brief asked for freshness without sacrificing depth, a balance Oliveira achieved by combining ozonic brightness with earthy undertones. The result carries the brand's heritage of refined simplicity while introducing an entirely new language of scent.
The note selection reflects a specific philosophy: rose deserves context. Rather than presenting rose in isolation, the composition frames it with ozonic clarity at the opening to suggest the garden's moisture, then grounds it with moss and patchouli to honor the plant's earthy roots. Freesia bridges the gap between the cool opening and warm heart, its slightly fruity character softening the citrus transition. Jasmine adds nocturnal depth that prevents the rose from reading as purely daytime. Tog ether, these choices create a rose that feels naturalistic rather than abstract, capturing the whole garden rather than a single bloom.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a crisp, almost watery quality thanks to ozonic notes meeting bergamot, a combination that evokes rain-washed air rather than sweet citrus. This clears quickly into the heart, where rose unfurls alongside jasmine and supporting florals, presenting not a single note but a garden chorus. As time passes, the bright opening recedes and moss takes over, its green, slightly damp character wrapping around the lingering floral sweetness. Patchouli adds warmth beneath the surface while musk provides a skin-like closeness, making the final hours feel Intimate rather than performative. The journey from garden freshness to grounded earthiness mirrors the experience of walking through a rose border as morning turns to midday.
Cultural impact
Green Rose signals Aspinal of London’s confident step into niche perfumery, joining the 2024 trio that celebrates English garden motifs. Its crisp opening and mossy drydown have drawn attention from collectors who appreciate a fragrance that feels both contemporary and rooted in tradition. Early buzz notes its suitability for spring outings and understated office wear, positioning it as a modern classic within the brand’s growing scent portfolio.
