The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Delphine Thierry composed Hero in 2022 for ARgENTUM, a house where each fragrance maps to a Jungian archetype. The Hero belongs to the archetype of the one who acts, the questing figure, the protagonist of their own narrative. Thierry built the composition from materials with weight and presence: cardamom for its dry, almost mentholated spark, clove for its dark warmth, oud for the gravity it brings to the base. The opening moves through basil and orange before the spice notes take hold, with Peru balsam adding resinous depth at the heart. Oakmoss and incense anchor the drydown, giving the oud a mossy, ritualistic character that distinguishes it from sweeter interpretations of the material.
What makes this composition unusual is the deliberate tension between bright top notes and a base that leans into smoke and earth. Basil and orange open with crisp clarity, their green and citrus facets cutting cleanly before the composition pivots. The heart turns darker as Peru balsam and clove arrive, their dense resinous weight pulling the scent away from the brightness above. Oakmoss and incense settle into the base together, giving the oud a mossy, ritualistic atmosphere.
The evolution
The first minutes belong to basil and orange, green and citrus giving the opening its initial clarity. Clove enters the heart early, carrying its familiar dark warmth, with cardamom adding its dry, almost mentholated heat alongside the deep resinous pull of Peru balsam. As the composition develops, the brightness of the top notes recedes and oud takes prominence, smoky and dense, underwritten by patchouli's earthy hum. Incense weaves through the later stages of the wear, adding a meditative thread. Eventually the drydown simplifies to oakmoss, worn patchouli, and the faint trace of clove that lingers long after the brighter notes have faded.
Cultural impact
Hero exists within a broader conversation around how oud can be approached outside its most common associations. Rather than leaning into plush sweetness, this composition keeps the material grounded in smoke, spice, and earth. The oud reads as raw and present, supported by basil, orange, clove, cardamom, and Peru balsam rather than softened by floral or amber accords. Patchouli, oakmoss, and incense in the base reinforce the darker character of the composition.
