The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cristian Calabrò designed Almost A Virgin in 2022 as a study in contrast, challenging expectations through careful note placement. The bright apple and red berry opening creates an immediately likeable impression, but the composition's real purpose emerges in what follows. Antonio Maretti's Renaissance-inspired approach to balance and proportion manifests in the tension between the playful opening and the sophisticated heart, each element calibrated to create a narrative arc that evolves across the wear.
The note structure was designed to subvert expectations. Pink pepper's spiced quality was chosen specifically to prevent the apple and red berries from becoming too sweet, while geranium bridges the gap between the fruity opening and the floral heart. In the base, patchouli's earthy weight is tempered by sandalwood's creaminess, with musk acting as the connective tissue that makes the entire composition feel cohesive on skin. Each layer was placed to create contrast, then resolution.
The evolution
The scent opens with a burst of tart apple and red berries that feels immediate and joyful, softened only by a whisper of pink pepper's spice. This fruity brightness hangs for the first fifteen minutes before the composition pivots. Geranium arrives next, its green, almost medicinal edge cutting through the sweetness, followed closely by rose's powdery petals. The contrast between the tart opening and this refined floral heart defines the fragrance's character. By the third hour, the drydown takes over as musk, patchouli, and sandalwood emerge. The musk provides intimate warmth, patchouli grounds everything with its earthy complexity, and sandalwood adds a creamy woodiness that smooths the transition from bright opening to sophisticated close.
Cultural impact
The provocative naming strategy sets Antonio Maretti apart in a crowded niche market. Fragrances like Almost a Virgin, Walk of Shame, and Slumber Party create immediate narrative tension that invites curiosity. This is not a house that hedges. The naming suggests a brand built for people who enjoy a little knowing humor in their scent wardrobe, and the compositions, like this one, largely deliver on that promise.
